Definite and Indefinite Articles in English Grammar
Articles are small words, but they play a big role in English grammar. They come before nouns and help us understand whether we are talking about something specific or general. In English, there are three articles: A, An, and The. These ‘Articles in English grammar’ are divided into two categories. They are as follows:
- “A” and “an” are called ‘Indefinite Articles‘.
- “The” is called the Definite Article.
In short:
- Use A/An when talking about something for the first time or something not specific.
- Use The when talking about something already known or particular.
Indefinite Articles: A and An
Indefinite articles are used when we don’t refer to a particular person or thing. They introduce something new in conversation or writing.
Rules for “A”
Rule 1:
“A” is used before singular countable nouns
Examples:
- a dog
- a car
- a banana
- a house
Rule 2:
“A” is used before words beginning with consonant letters
Examples:
- a laptop
- a chair
- a table
- a fan
Rule 3:
“A” is used before words beginning with consonant sounds (even if starting with a vowel letter)
Examples:
- a university (sounds like “yu”)
- a European (sounds like “yu”)
Rules for “An”
Rule 1:
“An” is used before singular countable nouns beginning with vowel letters
Examples:
- an elephant
- an apple
- an airport
Rule 2:
“An” is used before words beginning with vowel sounds (silent “h”)
Examples:
- an honest man
- an hour journey
Definite Article: The
The definite article “The” is used when the noun is specific, unique, or already mentioned.
Rules for “The”
Rule 1:
“The” is used before something already mentioned
Example:
- I bought a pen. The pen is blue.
Rule 2:
“The” is used before well-known places, books, newspapers, etc.

- The Taj Mahal
- The Bible
- The Hindu
Rule 3:
“The” is used before a common noun to show a class
Examples:
- The tiger is our national animal.
- The lion is the king of the forest.

“The” is used before adjectives in plural form to show a class
Examples:
- The poor suffer a lot.
- The deaf cannot hear.
Rule 5:
“The” is used before superlative adjectives
Examples:
- Rohan is the tallest boy.
- This is the best book.
Rule 6:
“The” is used before unique things
Examples:
- The sun
- The moon
Rule 7:
“The” is used before names of rivers, oceans, mountain ranges
Examples:
- The Himalayas
- The Ganges
- The Bay of Bengal
