What is a Conjunction?
A conjunction is a word used to join words, groups of words, or sentences.
Examples:
- Rama and Ratikant are my friends.
- My elder sister is diligent but my younger sister is lazy.
- You may stay here or go home.
- Rajnish passed because he worked hard.
Here, words like and, but, or, because are conjunctions.
Types of Conjunctions
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
They join words or sentences of equal importance. Examples: and, but, or, yet, so, for, nor.
- She is kind and generous.
- He tried hard, but failed.
- Work hard, or you will fail.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions
They join a dependent clause to an independent clause. Examples: because, although, unless, while, since, if.
- He passed because he studied well.
- You will not succeed unless you try.
- Although she is poor, she is happy.
3. Correlative Conjunctions
They work in pairs. Examples: either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also.
- Either you study hard or you will fail.
- Neither Ramesh nor Suresh was present.
- She is not only intelligent but also hardworking.
Rules for Using Conjunctions
- Use coordinating conjunctions to connect equal ideas.
- Use subordinating conjunctions to show cause, condition, or contrast.
- Avoid double conjunctions in one sentence.
- Place conjunctions correctly to maintain sentence flow.

Exercise 1: Make Sentences
Make 5 sentences with each of these conjunctions: and, but, yet, still, however, otherwise, so, for, as, therefore, while, unless, although.
